Someone’s Got a Case of the Mondays: Jen’s Weekly Thought Dump!

Greetings from the greater Ozarks area, specifically my bed!

Yesterday was sheet washing and unemployment filing day, PLUS Easter. Talk about busy! I celebrated by making, and not eating, omelets, and making, and eating, bacon for breakfast/lunch, and Josh grilled some chicken with a citrus rub that seriously made it almost taste like, for whatever reason, KFC original recipe for dinner. It was magical. I also had a couple of very healthy protein shakes and super greens (I tried to stop with this and noticed a very, well, noticeable change, and strangely also missed the flavor? But then I remembered I don’t know who I am and nothing is real right now and ordered more).

What else did I consume on Easter…oh, yeah! A pound of jelly beans, 10 granola bars, a couple of pieces of fluffernutter toast, and about a box of Cheez-Its. I did this AFTER binge-watching 1000-lb Sisters on TLC (but during my binge-watch of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days on TLC). Side note, send me all of your hot tips for TLC shows with titles that start with numbers. thx.

I’ve stayed up on my spreadsheet acumen by logging all the movies I’ve watched during quarantine. I’m averaging 20 new movies a week, which is great, because I had so many to see. I had printed off the AFI’s 100 Greatest American Movies list in January, and I’m up to 56 on that one (slow going, though…some of these are rough). Thanks to Letterboxd, though, I can easily pinpoint lists of my favorite distributors, or actors, or directors, and work my way through their catalogs, so I’m also targeting A24, Robert DeNiro, and Stanley Kubrick. (Today’s recommendation, though: Logan Lucky. I had somehow not only never seen this, but had no idea what it was about. Channing Tatum. Adam Driver. Roy from The Office. Free with Prime).

The point is, I’ve watched 56 movies since March 22…59 counting the couple I’d already seen but re-watched with Josh. I’ve also watched three full seasons of different shows, and our film club is “meeting” weekly for Netflix Parties (I LOVE this Chrome extension) – tonight’s party is What Lies Beneath!

Wow, you might think, this is all such great information! Obviously, you must have so much time to exercise while you’re watching all these movies, and that’s so cool for you!

WELL YOU’RE WRONG. I MEAN YOU’RE RIGHT BUT ALSO I BARELY MOVE WITH PURPOSE MORE THAN 30 MINUTES A DAY AND THAT’S SOMETHING FUTURE ME REALLY SHOULD LOOK AT. Seriously, I’m doing 100 push-ups and 100 squats with a 35-pound dumbbell daily, focusing on the form over the weight, but when you’re not moving a lot the rest of the time it doesn’t make a whole lot of noticeable difference physically so please feel free to contact me if you have struggles because I’m really good at giving advice to people who aren’t me.

In non-movie and non-non-workout news, I’ve gotten way better with egg preparation, specifically over-medium and omelets. Turns out you really just have to make the time to watch the eggs for small changes that tell you what to do next. Weird. My other breaking news on the “breakfast is now served mid-afternoon” front: bacon is pretty much always good, even when it’s bad. We’ve had several brands, and even the cheap shit that resists my bacon press tastes delicious.

In kid news, my stepsons are still twin boys who are almost 11 and who are still out of school in what they see as double-summer vacation. They did do independent projects last week, and they were super cute and incredibly good considering they’re fifth-graders and I made them do outlines and slideshows. My kid Hunter and his girlfriend/my bonus kid Shelby are crushing online classes (I think he’s going to end up with 29 hours this semester – thank you to Western Governors University for having this model!) as well as Animal Crossing New Horizons. They did a great Tootie-Too-torial on YouTube and I’ve watched it a bunch of times.

Finally, I’ve had a little time to devote to meme mining on Reddit because I’m finally slowing down on my Yahtzee with Buddies addiction and I’m just not good at Scrabble yet.

Anyway so that’s where I am in week – four? It’s a weird place between really loving the alone time and not really being alone so still carrying plenty of guilt about doing pretty much what I want even though my husband is cool about letting me be a lump.

What are you guys doing and not doing? I’m honestly interested. These are fascinating times in the study of human behavior, amirite?

I start every day vowing to become healthier and end every day by zeroing out my fridge.
That's the kind of self-sabotage that forms the core of my being.
You know what I'm good at, though? Spinning words into a magical skein that envelopes you in success. Let's talk about that first, and if snacks end up happening, so be it.

  1. Uh, mostly focus on working just enough to qualify for a nap every afternoon. That is if the neighbor’s 4 dogs aren’t barking or digging holes in my yard!
